A new monthly feature is now available for those interested in some of the applications available though thermal analysis. These hot sheets will cover a limited issue once a month. This month''s issue is on the different types of sampling cups, the different results of each style and where they are most appropriately used, as well as the different kinds of problems each style has.
MeltLab Paper for Next Casting Congress
MeltLab Systems has submitted a paper on thermal analysis for the next Casting Congress to be held in Florida in March 2010. Here is the abstract:
Thermal Analysis has been used in the past to determine phase diagrams, which describe temperatures and ener-gies produced from crystallization or the reversed melting of various crystal substances. Physics describes how exothermic and endothermic reactions relate to microstructure. As the hardware and software for thermal analysis improve, it can be expected that the refinements will al-low better understanding of casting solidification and microstructure. Currently the standard consists of extracting a microstructure sample from the casting or creating a test coupon in the mold or an external mold, and examin-ing it under the microscope. If thermal analysis could be improved and made more sensitive, then the speed of analysis and the manpower associated with microstructure analysis could be greatly reduced. This paper examines ways of improving that sensitivity and the results from those improvements in finding carbides, shrinkage, and oxides in iron, beta crystals, gas, copper, and magnesium silicide in aluminum, and phosphorus in copper.
Programming changes/upgrades
Scoreboard support for MeltLab has been upgraded to support multiple displays. A background process now maintains up to 16 scoreboads without degradeing the rest of the system. A background process (thread) was added to prevent the main process from taking too much time with writing the scoreboards.A new archiving system has been added to MeltLab to allow up to 2000 curves per year to be permanently stored and recalled for each year. Great for those special cases you don't want to loose or misplace.
